Kiwifruit is considered to pack a big nutritional punch –what makes it super, where to buy it, how to eat it?
In today’s fast paced world, convenience is key and we all want a turnkey solution for life’s daily necessities. One area that is often neglected as we race around, is our basic nutrition. Unfortunately, the perception still exists that eating healthily and getting all the nutrients we need, is time-consuming and complicated. Nature, however, offers a bounty of convenient, nutrient-rich foods in the form of fruit and vegetables.
One of the biggest nutritional powerhouses that nature has to offer is kiwifruit. Consistently ranked as one of the most nutrient-rich fruit available, this fruit - packed full of vitamins, minerals, fibre and enzymes. - is low in fat and sugar, hence it is the ideal addition to any healthy meal plan.
As it is a rich source of vitamin C, it is an essential for growth and development - including strong bones and teeth, the nervous and circulatory systems, good immunity and helps iron absorption. Whilst brightly coloured fruit and vegetables are generally good sources of vitamin C, kiwifruit outshines the others, including all citrus fruits. There is twice as much vitamin C in a Zespri kiwifruit as there is in an orange and just one kiwifruit daily meets more than the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C for the average person. Cooking, processing and storage destroys this essential nutrient, therefore the best way of obtaining vitamin C is from fresh, ideally raw fruit and vegetables such as kiwifruit - the easiest way to do this is to cut the kiwifruit in half and scoop out the delicious flesh with a spoon.
In addition to it’s powerful vitamin C content, kiwifruit contains relatively high levels of other antioxidants such as vitamin E (which works with vitamin C as an antioxidant) and, bite for bite, has five times the vitamin E content of oranges or apples, and almost double that of blueberries. Eating just two Zespri kiwifruit a day has been proven to reduce the amount of free radical damage to the body’s cells due to it’s antioxidant content.
Scientific research has shown that eating Zespri kiwifruit regularly contributes to good digestive health, by improving bowel habits and intestinal enzyme levels and helping to balance good and bad bacteria in the gut, which may help build natural resistance to illness. In addition, kiwifruit also contains an enzyme which can aid digestion of protein such as meat, milk and legumes.
Zespri kiwifruit is available in the fruit and vegetable section of most major supermarkets and grocery stores nationally, making it convenient to add to family’s daily diet. It is convenient to eat, making a good addition to lunchboxes or eaten on it’s own as a snack.
